Inside The Circle: Save Souls by Acting

SSA, short for Save Souls by Acting; started as a drama group that was completely unplanned - a couple of students who came together, and decided to expand; giving others the opportunity to perform as well.

We sat with the president of SSA, Ogunleye Omolulu Wisdom, to ask some questions bordering the student group and what their vision for the future is.

Why SSA?

Because we tell a story, not just biblical teachings, but life lessons as well. And the impact it has had on those who have watched our plays as well as the positive feedback and reception received is enough answer.

The vision for SSA is ultimately?

To become a widely recognized Christian drama group that serves as a platform for individuals with diverse talents to discover, develop, and showcase their gifts, using creative expression to communicate biblical truths and other meaningful messages that positively impact society, the university and beyond.

What should we expect?

You can expect SSA to appear in more places; you never know where we'll be performing next, but believe that we will always create impact. Through this semester, SSA will also be at departmental events, both for full dramas and short presentations. You can keep up with what we do on our platforms, IG: savesouls_bu TikTok: @ssa__bu.

What is your edge?

Our edge is emotional realism and purpose driven drama. We tell stories people can recognize from their own lives, and not just surface level drama. Every performance is meant to stir reflection, conviction, and growth, not just applause.

How has the journey been?

The journey when building, no matter what it is, is always tough. I think the most difficult thing was gathering willing participants. In the beginning, the structure wasn't there compared to presently, and there were problems with both our registration as a student body and getting called on. In short, the journey wasn't easy, as the journey to greatness never is, but we thank God and acknowledge that there's still room for massive growth.

Why should we buy into your vision?

We offer more than just entertainment - we create a platform where talents are not just displayed, but used meaningfully to communicate messages that inspire, challenge, and transform lives.

In a time where many creative spaces focus only on popularity or trends, we stand out by intentionally blending creativity with values. Through drama, we address real-life issues, share biblical truths, and spark conversations that matter, all in ways people can relate to.

Supporting our cause means investing in a movement that develops talent, builds character, and sees the arts as a tool for positive influence within the university community and beyond.

Any experiences you want to share?

There's one I remember vividly.

A head pastor called on us and told us he had reserved a slot, without any previous communication. We had to come up with a short script based on a topic the pastor had provided - it required memorizing bible verses some of us had never read before, and multiple lines which each actor had to memorize in less takes than usual.

Each actor had to get back to their halls to get costumes, and those that couldn't had to make do with what they had. Since we couldn't get the singers of the group over in time, we had to seek help from the choir members because the script involved singing and none of the available actors were up to the task. Luckily, they understood and we were able to give a performance worthy of a roaring applause.

It’s often said; when preparation meets opportunity, it becomes luck. From then till present, none of us have regretted the decision to join SSA.
